PZI xpub - Facilities

PZI Experimental publishing, in conjunction with The Willem de Kooning Academie and the Hogeschool Rotterdam, offers the following infrastructure:

Servers

Practical understanding of Unix operating systems and the motivation to support autonomous hosting are crucial elements of the course. This is the reason why PZI xpub runs and administrates its own servers, within the WdKA/HR network, and integrates such resources tightly within the course.

For the past years we've been relying and maintaining a trusty Core 2 Quad machine, currently running Debian with a couple Linux containers (LXC). You will get a shell account on one of these containers, and on some occasion for specific projects, a dedicated temporary container to run experiments, or specific projects can be made available for you.

The shell accounts are used extensively during the course, and you will be encouraged to maintain and publish your own user home directory, and web log. This very site is served from such servers, as well as our pads, wiki and git hosting.

(By the way, PRO TIP: If you are interested in home servers, artist-run servers and DIY datacenters, we recommend joining the http://homebrewserver.club, which meetings occasionally happen at PZI)

Workstations

PZI xpub provides its students with:

You are welcome to learn how to dual boot and install a free software operating system, next or in place of OSX in your workstation iMac. As a matter of fact, we regularly host install parties to learn together about free and open source operating systems.

A more comprehensive list of material available xpub (MMDC) can be found at the wiki.

Stations

The Stations are specialised workspaces at WdKA. Instructors and student-assistants are present all day (as well as in the evenings) in the Stations to help you. PZI Experimental Publishing works closely with two stations: Interaction, and Publication.

The Interaction Station is a great place for working with electronics, and do some hardware modding and hacking in general. There you can also access a range of equipment that have became archetypical of so called Fab-Labs, from 3D printers to laser cutters.

The Publication Station has a wide variety of machines and tools to develop publishing projects both in print and digital media. Riso stencil machine, flatbed printer, typesetting workshop, binding machine, silkscreen printing workshop, and much more. Next to that, the new DeviceLab allows you to test software and digital publication in general on several electronic devices, from Tablets to e-readers.

For more information about the stations, check http://www.pzwart.nl/facilities/.
